The importance of a Keyword Map

The importance of a Keyword Map

Keyword mapping is arguably the most crucial step to take when embarking on the SEO journey. Most people who want to take up an SEO service usually say, “I want to rank number 1 on Google”. However, it is not as simple as that. You need to choose specific keywords to rank for and that’s where the keyword map comes in.

What does it look like?

There are many tools that can help to create a keyword map for you. The most basic way to do it is on a spreadsheet with all your web pages on individual rows. The rest of the columns are for your keywords and factors that you deem important to evaluate your keyword. Some things to consider include competition, search volume and CTR. These are factors to evaluate the keyword and whether or not you should be using them.

Keyword research

Keyword research begins by finding keywords that people search for often. Once again, there is an extensive list of tools that you can use. However, Google’s keyword planner is a favourite amongst marketers. Make a list of keywords that your audience might search for when looking for your product/service. For example, if you are a Photobooth company, you might want to search keywords such as wedding Photobooth or custom Photobooth. These are terms your audience might be searching for when looking for your product/service

Targeting Strategy

At the beginning stages of creating your website, you will want to try to target long tail keywords. Short tail keywords typically have a lot of competition to them. Attempting to contest with well-established websites is counterproductive as you will have to spend a lot of money on ads and not be able to keep up with their page rank. Short tail keywords are things like “Photobooth Singapore”. Generally, the shorter the keyword and the easier it is to search, the stiffer the competition. Try aiming for long tail keywords such as “Photobooth rental Singapore” or “cheap Photobooth Singapore”. These keywords are likely lower in competition and easier to rank for.

You will want to target keywords that are relevant. As a Photobooth company, maybe you have a page dedicated to wedding Photobooth. You want to make sure that any keyword you are trying to rank for is relevant to the topic on the webpage.

Your keyword map is the backbone of your SEO strategy. You want the search engines to rank you for things that your audience are searching for. The keyword map ensures that all your web pages contents are optimised to rank for their individual keywords.  A good keyword map provides direction for your content.

Keyword maps are not just for new websites. It is useful to have a keyword map for websites that have been around for a while as it gives you a way to evaluate your content by cross-checking keywords to the content on your page. If you find that your content does not contain the keywords as much as it should then you should consider creating new content and changing existing content to target that keyword.
